The ‘Polaris’ or vertical breach (the name is taken from the submarine-launched Polaris missile) or vertical breach occurs when a shark rises near-vertically from the ocean floor towards its prey. The optical and positional coordination employed by the shark is spectacular the shark must track and predict the exact position, as well as the trajectory and path, of the prey micro-seconds ahead of contact. The shark camouflages itself by staying close to the ocean floor as it positions itself underneath the fast-moving seal. Once it has identified the prey location visually, the shark accelerates strongly using its massive caudal keel to propel its lunate tail fin and launch itself upward, rising towards its prey. In less than two seconds, the shark reaches its breach speed, corrects its ‘trajectory’ with its pectoral fins and strikes the seal with tremendous force and speed, even creating its own pressure or bow wave ahead of its snout. This pressure wave in fact sometimes works for the seal, as it can push the seal away from the shark’s jaws, giving the seal a second chance in trying to avoid the attacking apex predator.

In False Bay’s Seal Island, seals form a larger proportion of the shark’s diet during the winter months. Why these sharks feed more heavily on seals during the winter months is yet unknown, considering that the island has a resident population of seals the whole year round. Gut-content analysis of Great Whites indicates that sharks caught in nets preferentially feed on other sharks and rays, with juvenile Dusky sharks being the most common prey item, followed by bony fishes such as cob and sea bream. Marine mammals ranked third only, with remains of dolphins and whales evident. Another interesting finding is the complete absence of non-food items, such as plastic, licence plates, cans etc., which are often found in Tiger sharks. This shows that the Great White is not an indiscriminate feeder devouring anything it comes across,but rather a highly selective predator.
